Widowmaker Guide to Vastly Improve Your Aim

Hello everybody Dibz here and today I have an overwatch guide on how to improve your Widowmaker sniping. I am going to go over my general sensitivity settings, my DPI, and as well as go over some of the practice techniques that I usually use in order to warm up and allow you to improve your aim as well.

Sensitivity [@ 1:03]

So first of all let’s just go to my sensitivity settings, so we’re going to go to controls and for Widowmaker I actually have the same sensitivity as I do for all my heros, I have sensitivity at 6, but, my relative sensitivity while zoomed is at 38. I think the default is about 30, and I found that it is more important for you to have a little bit more sensitivity when you’re zoomed in because of turning around and trying to cover more area while you’re zoomed in. So that is my general sensitivity for Overwatch. Now as for my DPI I have 1,000 DPI [Guide to changing your DPI @ 0:57]. You also want to turn off something called “Mouse acceleration”, in order to do that you want to go to your control pannel and go to “Mouse”, once you’re on mouse you go to “Pointer options” and you turn off “Enhanced pointer precision” this is very important because for Mouse acceleration what it does is it increases the amount of distance that your screen moves the faster you do it. I am on the 6th tick on the Windows Mouse speed grid (default) as well. So what mouse acceleration is, is it makes you so that your screen turns faster a certain distance – the faster you turn your mouse. So lets say you want to go to here to 180* and it takes around 2cm on your mouse pad. Normally, if you do it slowly it would still take 2 CM because it is the same distance, but with mouse acceleration it will take only 1CM if you did it faster. So it is going to be inconsistent every time you do it and basically what i’m saying is your aim will be affected based on how fast you swipe your mouse, which is very inaccurate and inconsistent. So you want to make sure you have enhanced pointer precision OFF.

General:

So let’s just go over the general rules that I usually follow whenever I play a Sniper in a game. So whenever I go sniping in a game I like to aim at a specific target, and one flick of the wrist of my right hand all the way to the right without moving my arm actually, so your arm is stationary and one flick maximum would be about 45* to the right. So this is about 45* right here, and between this target and being horizontal like this. So you want to end up around here whenever you’re sniping with your scope, of course it shouldn’t be the same amount when you aren’t scoped in. You don’t want to have too high of a sensitivity otherwise you’ll be inaccurate while wrist flicking, however 45* should lead you to be at around the caution sign. Once you’re capable of consistently ending up at the same point with basic 45* swipes then you’ve gotten your sensitivity down. It really comes down to what you are comfortable with though, and that’s why you want to try these out and get it to whatever is right for you. Also for your mouse sensitivity you want to be able to swipe towards all the way to the right, and also to your left. This will involve you moving your arm slightly, so that incase anybody tries to flank you from your left or right side you can actually take them out without any problem. Because what happens if you don’t have enough sensitivity is you’ll have to swipe twice, and that won’t be good. So one flick of the wrist would be up to your caution sign, and also moving your arm would lead you to about 90 degrees. And the same thing to your left, one swipe = 45*, and with a little arm movement around 90 degrees. It’s going to be a little bit harder when you try and swipe in because typically you don’t have enough mouse space to go inward, and that is usually harder. But – anything going to your right, anything going to your left, with a movement of your arm would be 90 degrees~. Because what if there is like a Tracer coming through here, and you’re busy aiming somewhere but need to swipe right? You’ll be able to shoot them. So you want to be used to swiping to your left and right at head level. 45 degrees without moving your arm, and 90 degrees with a little arm movement.

Drill #1: Snapping to stationary targets [@ 5:32]

So once you have that down you want to practice aiming at this bot right here, and swipe towards the bot on the right. Back – and forth, back – and forth. You don’t have to do it instantaneously fast, but do it as fast as you can but also as accurately as you can. You don’t have to be instantaneous of course because not everybody has the fast or the most accurate reactions. As long as you are somewhere in the area, back and forth, back and forth, and you are pretty used to your sensitivity. It’s just like every other regular hero when you are sometimes upclose, and are also going back and forth. Of course your sensitivity is going to be different when you are closer/further away or zoomed in. And once you’re used to that and are able to go back and forth between these two targets consistently while being able to stop at their head what you want to do next is add the caution sign in. So you swipe to the caution sign, and swipe back. Bot -> Caution Sign -> Bot -> Back. So this is actually a little bit harder, because you have to go 2 different distances every time. This will get your hand used to it, to the swiping action, at different locations. This is very important because there is a lot of stuff going on at the same time in a battle and sometimes you have to swipe harder and swipe softer. Just keep swiping, back and forth, back and forth, etc. This is harder than training other heros I would say because there is a lot of distance that you have to cover when you’re scoping – and this actually can be very stressful on your wrist so you have to be careful and warm up your wrists before you do this. So just go back and forth, cation sign -> head -> caution sign -> head -> cation sign -> head. So at least if you’re somewhere in the zone of your caution sign that’s pretty good already. So just go back and forth, back and forth, back and forth – once you’re comfortable enough you can start shooting and then move onto moving targets.

Drill #2: Tracking moving targets [@ 7:59]

When you do moving targets it is a little bit different, the training is a little bit different but what you’re going to be doing is you’re going to be standing up ontop of this ledge right over here, so, you’re going to try and stick to this near target and follow it, because this is a closer target it’s going to have a very big hitbox, and you’re going to have to move your mouse a lot in order to keep up with it. So sometimes you’re going to have to let go of your mouse, but I think if you’re sniping this close it’s going to be a little bit unbeneficial to you, but honestly this is just to practice so you are trying to keep track of this target. So the best part, or the more realistic target would be at around this range right here. So this one you would be able to actually use your full range of motion without acutally picking up your mouse, and you should be able to  just follow this target. So whatever comes out just try and figure it’s head, and just stick on your target and see if you can track it without picking up your mouse. If you want you can switch to closer targets, but you will have to pick up your mouse everywhere now and then which of course you’ll have to pick up your mouse for. You’re not snaping just yet, but just following and tracking these. Of course you’re going to be at full charge here the entire times and sometimes you’re gonna have to zoom in here like that, and just follow back and forth – back and forth.

Drill #3: Snapping to different moving targets [@ 9:16]

Once you’re comfortable with doing that you can start staring in one area and start snapping towards different targets, wherever they appear. So right there they appeared in this direction, and you see this target on the left side, snap to that one, snap to this one, snap again, snap down, snap to this one, etc. Just keep going back and forth, back and forth. You can actually try from different directions as well, this is just beginning of course when you’re not used to doing the snapping motion just yet. You don’t want to continuously shoot yet because you want to keep your targets alive. Once you’re used to that you can start shooting while snapping. Once you start hearing the headshots that’s when you know you’re being very accurate. You honestly don’t even have to charge up all of your shots, because just for the sake of training you want to try practicing your reflexes as fast as you can, you aren’t necessarily trying to kill the target while practicing but just getting as many shots off on a target as accurately as you can. So you can just keep snapping and shooting (without charge) as many times as you can, while trying to make sure you hit all of the shots. This is actually one of the more difficult training practices that I do as Widowmaker. Imagine if they were full shots, and you were getting all of them – you’re targets are going to die obviously. The further the target is away from your spot of course the harder it’s going to be. So just look at one specific area, shoot -> go back, shoot -> go back.

Drill #4: Shooting, unscoping quickly, then scoping again [@ 11:21]

So once you’re able to do that you want to practice at least doing your “quickscoping”, well i’m not sure what they call it but it’s shooting -> let go, shooting -> let go. This is very useful because it makes you a moving target. As you can tell whenever you shoot there’s this “delay” on your charging, about half a second before it starts charging. So it actually really isn’t a disadvantage for you to let go of your scope, and start charging up again. So what you want to do is get used to the timing on how long it takes for you to recharge, and use that time to move, and then scope back in real quick. Because either way even if you hold it there’s going to be that time in which you’re charging, so being scoped in is actually useless (not entirely, i’ll explain later). So you want to shoot -> move -> scope -> shoot. Just practice somewhere, Shoot -> let go -> shoot -> let go. And now you want to start aiming at targets and also start moving at the same time, right when you let go. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, rinse repeat. So if you’re actually able to get all of the triplekill/doublekills whatever, that means you’re timing your shots perfectly. Because the amount of time it takes to shoot and kill somebody, and chain a kill, is the same amount of time it takes to power up a shot and get a full headshot which is an instant kill. And of course you want to aim for headshots if you can, and this is a pretty good spot to do it at. You can go for this target up here as well if you want a challenge. I feel like this is what I normally do whenever I want to practice Widowmaker, just snipe as many targets as you can while scoping in and out. It’s really good because there are a lot of targets to pick from, and you can chose whichever one you want. But I would assume that this is better than just trying to snap to each target back and forth, back and forth like that. This makes you think moreso about how long you have to charge, and that’s the most important part about Widowmaker – knowing how long it takes to charge, because you want to be able to shoot the second it hits 100%. You want to time it without wasting any time, just looking at it without shooting. When you’re wasting time you’re wasting DPS and Damage, and as a Sniper you want to push out as much DPS as you can while killing targets instantly. So when it comes to scoping in and out, I sometimes don’t like to unscope because it sometimes makes me lose sight of the target for a little bit or makes it so that I have to readjust. And sometimes when you don’t have to readjust, it makes it very easy for you to get back onto the same target if you miss. So it really depends on whether or not the target is shooting you, that determines whether or not you want to be scoping or unscoping. Of course other targets can be shooting you as well, but when I feel completely safe I don’t like to scope in and out. I like to try and stay scoped in and just get as many accurate shots as I can, because I feel more accurate this way. But – let’s say this targets shooting at me, then of course i’ll start going back and forth. So whenever a target is shooting at me, that’s when I start scoping in and out. So that is when you are are stationary and are shooting targets that are moving around.

Drill #5: Hook Shots [@ 15:24]

So what you want to do next is you want to practice your hookshots. So to practice hookshots you can practice them anywhere here, I like to practice off this bridge right here – what you can do is you can hook up and then snipe this target right here. First of all let me go over hookshotting, to hookshot you press space at the very end of your hook – so if you don’t do anything you end up like that. So if you push space at the very end, what it does is it released the hook before you reach the top and it just sends you in the same direction that you were moving. You can do it from different angles, and very high angles. You can do it from any angle, it really just depends on how you are looking at it, different angles determining how far you fly. So you press space -> let go -> then aim at a target while falling. So this is how you practice your hookshots, you can either focus the center targets or the ones to the right. Hook -> Space -> Fly -> Shoot a target while falling -> Rinse repeat.

Drill #6: 180 Degree Hook Shots [@ 15:42]

But there is another one that you can do for 180 hookshots, it’s right here [Video]. Most of the time when you use your hookshot to run away, you can use it, and then turn around and kill the target that is chasing you. So, what I like to do is I like to hook up here, do a 180, and try and snipe one of these dummies. So what you want to do is you want to stand in this center right here, and you want to hookshot up to the ledge. Once you get to the top you’re going to spin around, and try and shoot these targets down. If you can get both of them down that means your timing for your charging is perfect, because as you can see it’s a very short amount of time that you have in the air to be able to charge up twice while double headshotting. So first of all you want to get that down. The thing is you want to be able to try that/practice that over, and over, and over again, and the thing is once you get to the very top that’s where you want to start turning around and doing the 180. So right here, space 180 like that. So that’s why it’s very important like you to be able to do a 180 very easily. So again, Hook to the top -> Space -> 180 -> Shoot both targets while falling and spacing out your charges. So this is a very good place for you to practice your hookshots over and over again, and you can actually get both of them and start doing them against computers.

Drill #7: 180 Degree Hook shots and sniping vs bots [@ 18:22]

To do this you go to Play -> Custom game -> Set map to Numbani -> Set gameplay options to Skirmish Only, Health Modifier to 300%, Damage modifier to 25%, Healing modifier to 200%, Respawn time to 25%, Cooldowns to 0%. What this does is this allows you to hookshot as many times as you want, and this allows everybody to have full life and very little damage so you can hook shot as many times as you’d like against all of these computers. And I think that is everything else that you need, make sure team balancing is off so you have everybody on the opposite team as well. And just go on Numbani, save, add a computer [Easy], max count, team 2, and that should be it. You don’t want a Roadhog, it doesn’t matter you don’t need that many people just don’t have somebody who has the capability to CC (Crowd control) you. So once you get in you should choose Widowmaker of course. Anyway, you can move to different places to try and get a bigger area to do your hook 180’s. Same drills as #6 but versus computers shooting at you. This also allows you to experiment to where you can hook from, while practicing your aiming at the same time. Hookshot -> Spacebar -> 180 -> headshot. Rinse repeat, rinse repeat. This is very good practice while being entertaining at the same time, and is surprisingly fun. Back and forth, back and forth. So you don’t only have to use this for hookshots, you can use this just for practicing in general as well with your “quickscoping” (shooting + letting go of scope). Shoot -> let go -> charge -> shoot -> let go -> charge -> rinse repeat. So yeah, this is very good for you to continuously move back and forth while letting go of your scope at the same time, because it puts you under a lot of pressure since they’re shooting you at the same time, the bots add pressure and better game perspective compared to the targets in the training area. It is a little bit more realistically of course, but in a normal game these guys would die in 1 shot if you hit them in the head. So yeah this is what you want to do, just practice while moving, quick scope, rescope, back and forth, back and forth. So yeah practice that and mix in some hookshots as well just for the hell of it, make it more realistic. Over time you will see your accuracy improve overall. You can do jumping shots as well, and this is actually very fun actually. It’s ridiculous but it helps aton, if you have 5 people aiming at you and you can get at least one of them off, it’s very beneficial to you. So yeah just try that, try playing against computers and see how many times or how many headshots you can get, scoping in -> scoping out, making sure you’re at 100 then shooting. Rinse repeat, rinse repeat. While mixing in some hookshots. This is probably the last level of training you want to do once you’re done with the training dummies.
